    Notes
    • Muriel Augusta ("Murie") Kelly and husband, John Meisel

      Muriel Augusta ("Murie") Kelly was a descendant of Peter Switzer and Anna Maria Guier through:
      [1] Margaret Switzer & Anthony Neville;
      [2] Hester Ann Neville & Benjamin Switzer* (see note below);
      [3] Edgerton Switzer & Ada Augusta Williams; and
      [4] Mary Neville Switzer & Malcolm Kelly.

      Muriel Augusta was born to Malcolm & Mary Kelly on August 4th, 1918 at Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario. She married John Meisel on August 6th, 1949 in Toronto. They had no family.

      "Murie" Kelly was a talented Silkscreen and Woodcut design artist. Her noted specialty was her unique Christmas card designs - 25 of which were on display at Kingston's Agnes Etherington Arts Centre during the Christmas season of 1987. This was one year after her death on October 12th, 1986.
      "The selection of cards reflects Murie Miesel's sensitivity, humor and great skill; the most eye-catching print is a huge orange and red Christmas tree decorated with bells, each enclosing a familiar icon such as the maple leaf, the star of Israel, the fleur-de-lis and (true to the spirit of the 60s) the peace symbol. Among the Inuit style designs is one of several Inuit kayakers, with a neatly wrapped parcel balancing on each vessel." - The Whig-Standard Magazine, December 12, 1987.

      While attending Victoria College, University of Toronto, Murie drew cover designs and 'New Yorker' style cartoons for the college's literary journal. In the 1940s she designed sets for Dora Mavor Moore (Toronto) and in the 1950s for the International Players (Kingston). She also assisted with university art classes taught by Andre Bieler (he later founded the Art Department at Queen's University).

      For the "save the Grand Theater" campaign in the 1980's she designed several posters.

      Among her other artistic talents were: making bookcases, sculpting magnificent gardens (one was photographed for the Whig-Standard), and working with stained glass and batik.

      John Meisel was born in Czechoslovakia. He attended Victoria College, University of Toronto, where he met Murie. At that time he was the editor of the college's literary journal. John taught Political Science at Queen's University and briefly in England (where the couple lived in Hampstead). From 1980 to 1984 he was Chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. In September 1999 John was a recipient of the Order of Canada (presented at Rideau Hall by Romeo LeBlanc).
